  3. This is the README.TXT file distributed with version
  4. 3.1 of Almanac for Windows.  Topics discussed in

  15. REGISTRATION
  16. ------------
  17. Almanac is not free software.  It is released as
  18. shareware, which provides the opportunity for the
  19. program to be evaluated before it is purchased.
  20.  
  21. We hope that after you try Almanac you will like
  22. it so much that you will want to register.  By
  23. doing so you are voting with your pocketbook for
  24. us to continue developing high-quality, Windows
  25. shareware.
  26.  
  27. Complete information on how to register Almanac
  28. is included in the REGISTER.TXT file.
  29.  
  30.  
  31. COMPATIBILITY
  32. -------------
  33. Almanac 3.1 requires version 3.1 of Windows or
  34. higher.  Almanac is no longer compatible with
  35. Windows 3.0.
  36.  
  37. If you are running Windows NT, a 32 bit version
  38. of Almanac is available from Impact Software,
  39. specifically created for running under Windows NT.
  40.  
  41. If you are running a version of Almanac earlier than
  42. 3.0, please be advised that the format of the desktop
  43. data files has been changed.  Notes and appointments
  44. entered in Almanac 1.0 through 1.04 (*.ALD files)
  45. will require translation to the new data base format.
  46. Registered customers who are upgrading from a
  47. version of Almanac before version 3.0 can obtain
  48. a translation utility from Impact Software.
  49.  
  50. Overlays created with earlier versions of Almanac
  51. (*.ALO files) are 100% compatible with Almanac 3.0.
  52. The wedding anniversary gifts are now optional.
  53. You may edit any wedding anniversary definitions
  54. created with pre-3.0 versions and and check the
  55. Wedding check box to display this information.

  58. UPDATING A PREVIOUS ALMANAC INSTALLATION
  59. ----------------------------------------
  60. Almanac's SETUP utility has been enhanced to update
  61. a previous installation automatically.  Version 3.1
  62. of Almanac may be installed over version 3.0.  SETUP
  63. will update the program and help files, and will not
  64. overwrite any existing data files on your hard disk.
  65. If you specifically want SETUP to replace any
  66. release files such as the sample overlay files,
  67. delete them from your installation before running
  68. SETUP.
  69.  
  70. The format of the calendar files (*.ALC) has been
  71. updated in this release.  Almanac can read
  72. calendar files from earlier versions of the
  73. program.  The file will be re-written in the new
  74. 3.1 format if you select File.Save or when you
  75. close Almanac if you have selected the "Save
  76. Config on Exit" feature on the Options menu.
  77.  
  78. Once the file has been re-written in the new
  79. format, it cannot be used by versions of Almanac
  80. prior to 3.1.

  82.  
  83. INSTALLING ALMANAC 3.1
  84. ----------------------
  85. The Almanac package includes a graphical Windows
  86. installation program using the standard name of SETUP.EXE.
  87. You should place all of the files included in the release
  88. package on a floppy disk or in a temporary directory of
  89. your hard drive.
  90.  
  91. SETUP requires about 400K bytes to complete the
  92. installation of Almanac.
  93.  
  94. Run SETUP by selecting the 'Run...' command from the
  95. File menu of Program Manager or File Manager.  Enter
  96. "d:\SETUP" as the Command Line, where "d" is the
  97. drive/directory that you are installing Almanac FROM
  98. (for example, A:\SETUP).  Select "OK".
  99.  
  100. 1. The first action performed by SETUP is to display the
  101.    date your computer is set to.  Almanac's calendar
  102.    will not operate correctly if your computer is not set
  103.    to the correct date.
  104.  
  105. 2. SETUP will then display an Installation Control window.
  106.    Three pushbuttons allow you to change the FROM and TO
  107.    drives and paths for your install.  SETUP initially
  108.    sets these values for you so that you can just click
  109.    the Install button if you do not need to make changes.
  110.  
  111.    If you are using Program Manager as your Windows shell,
  112.    SETUP will allow a Program Group to be selected
  113.    to receive the startup icon for Almanac.
  114.  
  115. SETUP will inform you when installation is complete.
  116.  
  117. If your Windows installation is configured for French,
  118. German, or Spanish language, or if you would like to
  119. customize Almanac for another foreign language, please
  120. read the following section.
  121.  
  122.  
  123. FOREIGN LANGUAGE OPTION
  124. -----------------------
  125. Although it would be difficult for us to create and
  126. distribute our shareware in multiple languages, it is
  127. important to try to meet the needs of the many
  128. customers who would enjoy such a capability.  Almanac
  129. 3.1 has been designed to provide the option of
  130. customizing the text that appears on the menu as well
  131. as the text of calendar displays and prints.
  132.  
  133. Almanac 3.1 will look for the file ALMSTR.TXT in the
  134. directory that it is executed from.  This file contains
  135. the foreign language equivalents for specific text that
  136. is used on Almanac's menus and displays.
  137.  
  138. If your Windows installation is configured for either
  139. the French, German, or Spanish language, Almanac's
  140. SETUP utility will ask you if you would like it to
  141. install the appropriate language information for
  142. you.
  143.  
  144. If you are running any other language than these or
  145. English, SETUP will direct you here for more
  146. information.
  147.  
  148. You can build your own ALMSTR.TXT file by first
  149. copying the ALMSTR.TXT file from your release disk
  150. into your Almanac directory.  (SETUP does not
  151. install this file - you should only copy it from
  152. the release package onto your hard disk if you
  153. intend to customize Almanac for a language other
  154. than English.)  This file is a sample language
  155. template that contains the English text used in
  156. Almanac's menus and displays.  You can edit this
  157. file with Windows NOTEPAD or other ASCII text
  158. editor, replacing the English text with the
  159. appropriate text of the language you would like.
  160.  
  161. It is important that you do not add or delete
  162. any lines from this file.  Each line of the
  163. file contains text that Almanac will substitute
  164. for a specific area in the program.
  165.  
  166. Menu items contain an ampersand (&) character
  167. in front of the letter of the text that will
  168. be underlined and used for Alt-key selection.
  169. Hot keys, such as Ctrl-P for File.Print
  170. cannot be changed from their English derived
  171. defaults.
  172.  
  173. Any line that contains the text "Reserved"
  174. is not used by this version of Almanac.  Do
  175. not delete any lines marked "Reserved" as
  176. this will cause any following lines to be
  177. incorrectly substituted within Almanac.
  178.  
  179. Almanac will automatically use the new text in
  180. ALMSTR.TXT the next time it is executed.  Be
  181. careful to leave the first line of ALMSTR.TXT
  182. unchanged.  This contains the major and minor
  183. version of Almanac so that later versions can
  184. avoid using the file if changes to the contents
  185. of the file must be made.

  188. like to send us, as well as any corrections that
  189. you think we should make to the files we are
  190. distributing!

  202.  SOFTWARE LICENSE
  203.  
  204.  Non-licensed users are granted a limited license to use Almanac
  205.  on a 30-day trial basis for the purpose of determining
  206.  whether Almanac is suitable for their needs.  The use
  207.  of Almanac, except for the initial 30-day trial,
  208.  requires registration.  The use of unlicensed copies of Almanac,
  209.  outside of the initial 30-day trial, by any person,
  210.  business, corporation, government agency or any other entity is
  211.  strictly prohibited.
  212.  
  213.  A single user license permits a user to use Almanac
  214.  only on a single computer.  Licensed users may use the
  215.  program on different computers, but may not use the program
  216.  on more than one computer at the same time.
  217.  
  218.  No one may modify or patch the Almanac executable files
  219.  in any way, including but not limited to decompiling,
  220.  disassembling, or otherwise reverse engineering the program.
  221.  
  222.  A limited license is granted to copy and distribute Almanac
  223.  only for the trial use of others, subject to the above
  224.  limitations, and also the following:
  225.  
  226.   1)    Almanac and all of its release files must be
  227.         distributed in unmodified form, complete with the
  228.         file containing this license information.
  229.  
  230.   2)    Almanac may not be distributed in conjunction with
  231.         any other product without a specific license to do so
  232.         from Impact Software.
  233.  
  234.   3)    No fee, charge, or other compensation may be requested or
  235.         accepted, except as authorized below:

  237.         A) Operators of electronic bulletin board systems (sysops)
  238.            may make Almanac available for downloading only as
  239.            long as the above conditions are met.  An overall or
  240.            time-dependent charge for the use of the bulletin board
  241.            system is permitted as long as there is not a specific
  242.            charge for the download of Almanac.

  244.         B) Vendors of user-supported or shareware software approved by
  245.            the ASP may distribute Almanac, subject to the
  246.            above conditions, without specific permission.  Non-
  247.            approved vendors may distribute Almanac only after
  248.            obtaining written permission from Impact Software.
  249.            Such permission is usually granted.  Please write for
  250.            details (enclose your catalog).

  252.         C) Non-profit user groups may distribute copies of the
  253.            Almanac diskette to their members, subject to
  254.            the above conditions, without specific permission.
  255.            Non-profit groups may collect a disk duplication fee
  256.            not to exceed five dollars.
  257.  
  258.   LIMITED WARRANTY

  260.   Impact Software warrants that all disks provided are
  261.   free from defects in material and workmanship, assuming
  262.   normal use, for a period of 90 days from the date of
  263.   purchase.
  264.  
  265.   Impact Software warrants that the program will perform
  266.   in substantial compliance with the documentation supplied
  267.   with the software product.  If a significant defect in
  268.   the product is found, the Purchaser may return the
  269.   product for a refund.  In no event will such a refund
  270.   exceed the purchase price of the product.

  272.   EXCEPT AS PROVIDED ABOVE, IMPACT SOFTWARE DISCLAIMS ALL
  273.   WARRANTIES, EITHER EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING, BUT NOT
  274.   LIMITED TO IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY AND
  275.   FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, WITH RESPECT TO THE
  276.   PRODUCT.  SHOULD THE PROGRAM PROVE DEFECTIVE, THE
  277.   PURCHASER ASSUMES THE RISK OF PAYING THE ENTIRE COST OF
  278.   ALL NECESSARY SERVICING, REPAIR, OR CORRECTION AND ANY
  279.   INCIDENTAL OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES.  IN NO EVENT WILL
  280.   IMPACT SOFTWARE BE LIABLE FOR ANY DAMAGES WHATSOEVER

  284.   INABILITY TO USE THIS PRODUCT EVEN IF IMPACT SOFTWARE
  285.   HAS BEEN ADVISED OF THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH DAMAGES.

  287.   Use of this product for any period of time constitutes
  288.   your acceptance of this agreement and subjects you to its
  289.   contents.
